Abstract
This paper examines how Brazilian urban regions outlined with a hierarchical structure of a major city and subordinate towns have evolved. Three cases planned upon the British satellite town idea in the second half of twentieth century have been considered, namely northern Paraná state, Brasília and its environs and northern Mato Grosso state. By recognizing the physical transformation of the applied original concept, the outcomes of their current urban expanding and their regional context were explored. Growth mode and the connections among urban forms, as well their relationship to the natural setting, were considered. As a result, the paper shows that the towns sprawled, their urban prints got connected and surrounded the watercourses and remaining forests. Therefore, an ecological vision must be contemplated in the future planning of these regions aiming at an appropriate and sustainable city-nature interaction.
