Abstract

Os métodos de articulação da estrutura histórico-geográfica das paisagens urbanas são fundamentais para a morfologia urbana e apresentam um potencial considerável, porém pouco reconhecidos no planejamento. M. R. G. Conzen proporcionou uma expressiva contribuição para o seu desenvolvimento, principalmente entre o final dos anos 1950 e 1980. Ele demonstrou que, em cidades britânicas tradicionais, a forma delas historicamente estratificada reflete os resíduos distintivos de períodos passados e dá origem a uma hierarquia de regiões morfológicas ou unidades de paisagem urbana. Nos últimos vinte anos, houve aplicações e adaptações dos métodos de Conzen com demonstrações do seu potencial em conservação e planejamento do patrimônio, em diversas partes do mundo, incluindo o Extremo Oriente. No entanto, é essencial que a regionalização morfológica urbana seja fundamentada na sensibilidade à dinâmica da paisagem urbana e, especialmente, por comparações de diferentes áreas urbanas, que haja consciência do nível de resolução no qual estas unidades são delimitadas. Cuidadosamente aplicado, este método pode trazer importante contribuição para enfrentar um dos grandes desafios que a morfologia urbana enfrenta hoje: o fornecimento de bases sólidas para pesquisa comparativa e sua aplicação na prática de planejamento.
