Abstract
This paper aims to present the traditional concepts of fringe belts, both those defined by Louis in 1936, studied by M. R. G. Conzen in his 1960 research, and those observed by M. P. Conzen in North American cities. By identifying the characteristics found in studies prepared by Brazilian researchers, the aim is to conceptualize the main ones and discuss their correct nomenclature. The methodological procedures initially include consultations of the texts of the two Conzen researchers, which allow the identification of these morphological elements through analyses of the development of the cities in which they are located. In the next stage, studies on these morphological elements carried out by Brazilian researchers in different urban contexts are addressed. Cities of colonial origin, such as Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Belém and Salvador, are analyzed in relation to the context of formation of the urban fabric and their respective fringe belts. Research on work carried out in cities that originated in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Maringá, Uberlândia and Belo Horizonte, allows us to compare and evaluate the application of fringe belt concepts in different cities. More than just knowledge of the work carried out by national researchers, these studies point to the potential for integration between approaches from Urban Morphology and Landscape Ecology.
